To paraphrase\u00c2\u00a0Allan, our Phosphorescent Phage, true data loss in CheckBook<\/a> is rare, but it’s pretty easy to get in a spot where it looks like your Entries are gone for good. \u00c2\u00a0Don’t panic.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 You’ve got extremely<\/em><\/strong> good odds on things just being hidden from view. \u00c2\u00a0Let’s go over some of the\u00c2\u00a0ways Entries\u00c2\u00a0can come up\u00c2\u00a0missing and how to get everything\u00c2\u00a0back to normal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Your Entries\u00c2\u00a0may be out of order.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 You can sort by any column in CheckBook by clicking the column header – the name just above the actual data in the column, like Date, Type, Description, or Amount.<\/strong> \u00c2\u00a0If a click hits any column header besides Date,<\/strong> though, it could look like Entries\u00c2\u00a0are missing. \u00c2\u00a0Give\u00c2\u00a0the Date<\/strong> column header\u00c2\u00a0a single click and everything will get back in line. \u00c2\u00a0Click the header once more to flip the sort order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. A Search option might be active.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 When you use the Search<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0at the top right of the window, CheckBook hides Entries that don’t match\u00c2\u00a0the current Search<\/strong> options. \u00c2\u00a0There’s even a preference to keep your Search<\/strong> options when you switch Accounts or close and reopen CheckBook. \u00c2\u00a0That lets you set up things like always hiding reconciled Entries in the Reconcile<\/strong> section – and it can also lead to a moment of despair if you forget a Search<\/strong> option is actively hiding some of your Entries. \u00c2\u00a0To make sure that’s not the case, click the Search<\/strong> field, click the magnifying glass at the left side of the Search<\/strong> field, and click the Clear All Search Options<\/strong> menu item.\u00c2\u00a0 To change the preference for keeping your Search<\/strong> options when switching Accounts, go to the CheckBook<\/strong> menu, click the Settings…<\/strong> or Preferences…<\/strong> menu item, and look near the bottom of the window for the Save Search Options<\/strong> checkbox.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Your Entries\u00c2\u00a0may be in a different Account.<\/strong> \u00c2\u00a0CheckBook documents can have more than one Account, so you’ll want to be sure you’re in the same Account as all those Entries you’re looking for. \u00c2\u00a0Click the Accounts<\/strong> sidebar button at the bottom right or left corner of the window (or the Accounts <\/strong>button at the top right of the window in CheckBook 2<\/strong> or earlier) once or twice to make sure the list of your Accounts is visible on the side of the window, then single-click the name of each Account you find there to see if your data appears. \u00c2\u00a0You might need to try\u00c2\u00a0ideas 1<\/strong> or 2<\/strong> above for each Account, just to be sure things aren’t out of order or hidden by a Search<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. If you’re using CheckBook Pro<\/a>, you might be in\u00c2\u00a0a Folder or Smart Folder.<\/strong> \u00c2\u00a0Click the Accounts<\/strong> sidebar button at the bottom right or left corner of the window (or the Accounts <\/strong>button at the top right of the window in CheckBook 2<\/strong> or earlier) once or twice to make sure the list of your Accounts is visible on the side of the window,\u00c2\u00a0then single-click the name of each Account, rather than any blue Folders or purple Smart Folders, to see if your data appears.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Your Entries\u00c2\u00a0could be in a different document.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 You can have more\u00c2\u00a0than one document (you knew that, right?) and it’s not too uncommon to go up to the File<\/strong> menu looking for a way to create a new Account and accidentally create a new document, instead. \u00c2\u00a0Luckily, the File<\/strong> menu’s Open Recent<\/strong> submenu keeps track of the last few documents you’ve opened. \u00c2\u00a0Go to the File<\/strong> menu, down to the Open Recent<\/strong> submenu, and try each document you find there to see if your data appears.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If these ideas\u00c2\u00a0don’t seem to apply and things still look\u00c2\u00a0dire, they’re really not.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 Even if your data is truly gone, you could have a Time Machine<\/strong> backup\u00c2\u00a0or\u00c2\u00a0a backup “in the cloud”, and CheckBook even makes its own backups when it sees you haven’t used it in a week or more. \u00c2\u00a0We can help figure it out and, unless we’re talking major catastrophe, get you back up and running. \u00c2\u00a0So, take a few slow, deep breaths and send a System Information<\/strong> report, which tells us how your Mac is set up, along with\u00c2\u00a0your recent log messages,<\/strong> where we can piece together how CheckBook’s been used over the last few weeks, to support@splasm.com<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0Here’s how to gather these for us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
