The short of it is <\/strong>Mac App Store apps won’t ask for a serial number. \u00c2\u00a0If you’re asked for one, you’ve got a version that isn’t from the Mac App Store. \u00c2\u00a0Namely, a trial from our website.<\/p>\n

The long of it is <\/strong>the Mac App Store is a one-stop shoppe for finding, purchasing, installing, and updating apps on your Mac – but there’s one thing it doesn’t do\u00c2\u00a0and that’s\u00c2\u00a0let you try before you buy. \u00c2\u00a0That’s OK, you say. \u00c2\u00a0You visit our website and download a\u00c2\u00a0trial. \u00c2\u00a0While you’re\u00c2\u00a0kicking the tires you’re\u00c2\u00a0asked for a serial number, but you let it pass\u00c2\u00a0because\u00c2\u00a0you’re just giving it a spin to see if everything works as advertised. \u00c2\u00a0Before you know it, the app rocks your world and you can’t live without it.<\/em> \u00c2\u00a0You\u00c2\u00a0head back to the Mac App Store, click the Purchase\u00c2\u00a0button, and then…nothing noteworthy happens, so you, proud new owner of a copy of a shiny new app, get to\u00c2\u00a0using it in earnest.<\/p>\n

There’s just one hitch: \u00c2\u00a0every time you use the app\u00c2\u00a0it\u00c2\u00a0keeps asking\u00c2\u00a0for a serial number. \u00c2\u00a0What’s this? \u00c2\u00a0You never got a serial number! \u00c2\u00a0You rummage. \u00c2\u00a0There, there’s\u00c2\u00a0an order number. \u00c2\u00a0It doesn’t work. \u00c2\u00a0You fluster. \u00c2\u00a0Have you\u00c2\u00a0been conned? And then you\u00c2\u00a0realize the trial is still installed, never replaced by the Mac App Store version because…the Mac App Store is a little dense when it comes to figuring out how to update what’s already installed. \u00c2\u00a0It won’t replace non-Mac App Store copies with Mac App Store copies unless the Mac App Store version number is higher and it only gets more confused when it finds multiple copies\u00c2\u00a0of the same app\u00c2\u00a0(it’ll update one copy but you get to guess\u00c2\u00a0which!).<\/em><\/p>\n

The secret handshake <\/strong>is to remove the trial by dragging its application icon to the Trash before<\/em> clicking the Mac App Store’s Purchase button. \u00c2\u00a0If you’ve already purchased, just drag\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0application icon to the Trash anyway, go back to the Mac App Store, click the Purchased button at the top of the window, and click the Install button next to the application. \u00c2\u00a0That’s it, unless you’re not signed into the Mac App Store<\/a> with the Apple ID used for your purchase, or the purchase has been hidden<\/a> in the meantime, or the Mac App Store goes on the blink\u00c2\u00a0and you have to try restarting your Mac in between dragging the app to the Trash and purchasing or reinstalling. \u00c2\u00a0And note we\u00c2\u00a0recommend dragging only the application itself to the Trash.<\/strong> \u00c2\u00a0Dragging anything else besides the application icon\u00c2\u00a0– or using a third-party uninstaller or “cleaner” app to do the deed – can\u00c2\u00a0zap any of the hard work you\u00c2\u00a0put\u00c2\u00a0into the trial. \u00c2\u00a0As long as you just swap out only the application file itself your work should\u00c2\u00a0be there waiting for you the next time you fire up the app.<\/p>\n
