{"id":3346,"date":"2019-10-04T22:13:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-05T03:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/?p=3346"},"modified":"2019-10-09T09:19:46","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T14:19:46","slug":"macos-10-15-catalina-compatibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/?p=3346","title":{"rendered":"macOS 10.15 Catalina Compatibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>It&#8217;s October,<\/strong> the season of OS updates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Oh, <strong>look<\/strong> at em!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an iOS 13.1&#8230;! \u00c2\u00a0No! \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s a&#8230;13.1&#8230;<strong>2<\/strong>!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Waaaaait a minute\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6I see a watchOS 6!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>On and on it goes, OS updates just a\u00e2\u20ac\u2122streamin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 outta the mothership, with thousands of compatibility updates from developers not far behind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 And before you know it, s<\/span>ometime this month, could even be today, the latest macOS, version 10.15, nicknamed &#8220;Catalina&#8221;, will likely make its way onto your Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Packed with goodies, Catalina also comes with a big ol\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 gotcha:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>your 32-bit applications won&#8217;t work one&#8230;bit. \u00c2\u00a0<em><strong>Poof!<\/strong><\/em> \u00c2\u00a0Even so, it&#8217;ll relieve you to know <a href=\"http:\/\/splasm.com\/audiobookbuilder\">Audiobook Builder 2<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/splasm.com\/checkbook\">CheckBook<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/splasm.com\/checkbookpro\">CheckBook Pro<\/a> 2, <a href=\"http:\/\/splasm.com\/returnlabels\">Return Labels<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/splasm.com\/griddle\">Griddle<\/a> are already purring along in 64-bit awesomeness.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Just make sure you&#8217;re on the latest version of each and off you go.<\/p>\n<p>The next big deal is iTunes. \u00c2\u00a0<em><strong>Poof!<\/strong><\/em> \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s fragmented into four smaller applications &#8211; Music, Books, Podcasts, and TV, with syncing now part of the Finder &#8211; like a vampyre dispersing into a cloud of so many bats.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Or rats.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Depends on the mood.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Anyway, that&#8217;s a hitch in Audiobook Builder\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s get along, since it&#8217;s been joined at the hip with iTunes from the start, letting you add tracks from iTunes to your audiobooks and automatically adding your audiobooks back to your iTunes Library.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Hats off and a moment of silence, please,\u00c2\u00a0because<b> things are about to change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>Not like, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all broke so let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s go home kinda change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>More like, you gotta swap from the aisle to the window seat kinda change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>And hey, window seats have their perks.<\/p>\n<p><b>The rest of this is all about Audiobook Builder 2 on Catalina.<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>CheckBook and CheckBook Pro, Return Labels, and Griddle all seem to be just about right on Catalina.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We do have some fixes coming for CheckBook, but they&#8217;re general-purpose and not limited to Catalina so we&#8217;re more focused on Audiobook Builder for the moment.<\/p>\n<p><b>Enter Music and Books<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Like we said, iTunes is no more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Catalina now manages your music in a new application named Music and your audiobooks will, henceforth, live in Books.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 That means a few changes in Audiobook Builder, so we&#8217;re about to put a bow on version 2.1, which&#8217;ll handle all the details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you first launch Audiobook Builder 2.1, head to its preferences and you&#8217;ll find the traditional settings for saving your audiobooks in the iTunes Media Folder and automatically adding them to your iTunes Library have split into two sets of options &#8211; one for audiobooks and another for music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>When you build audiobooks, in the <strong>M4B<\/strong> file format, they&#8217;ll be saved according to the audiobooks settings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>When you build music tracks, in the <strong>M4A<\/strong> file format, they&#8217;ll be saved according to the music settings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re gonna reserve this space<\/strong> right here to talk about a couple of things that have to wait for the final release of Catalina, depending on whether we can get one of our workarounds through Mac App Store review.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, there may be a little meantime between when you install Catalina and when Audiobook Builder 2.1 is ready.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>You can still build your audiobooks with Audiobook Builder 2.0.2, though you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll need to change a couple of settings and add tracks to Music and Books by hand. \u00c2\u00a0It won&#8217;t hurt.<\/p>\n<p>To start, open <b>Audiobook Builder<\/b><strong> 2.0.2<\/strong>, go to the <b>Audiobook Builder<\/b> menu at the top left corner of your screen, click the <b>Preferences\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/b> menu item, and eyeball the <b>Save to<\/b> setting at the top of the window.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>If it&#8217;s set to <b>iTunes Media Folder,<\/b> pick something else.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Likewise, the <b>Add to iTunes Library<\/b> checkbox needs to be unchecked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s it.<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>That&#8217;s all you need to do to build audiobooks with Audiobook Builder 2.0.2 on Catalina.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>When they&#8217;re built, drag them from the location you set up in the preferences to the appropriate application &#8211;
