Moving from Quicken to CheckBook<\/a> or CheckBook Pro<\/a> usually only takes a minute or two and, in case you need to go back for any reason, won’t affect your data in Quicken at all. Here’s a guide to help you get set up. Choose your version of Quicken and off you go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quicken for Mac 2015 or later<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To move your data from Quicken for Mac 2015 or later, just find your document and tell CheckBook to create a new document with the data in that document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Open Quicken<\/strong> so you can see your data.<\/li>
  2. Go to the File<\/strong> menu near the top left corner of your screen and click the Show “Your Document Name” in Finder<\/strong> menu item. Your document should be highlighted in the Finder<\/strong>.<\/li>
  3. Open CheckBook<\/strong> or CheckBook Pro<\/strong>.<\/li>
  4. Go to the File<\/strong> menu, near the top left corner of the screen, down to New<\/strong>, and click the Document from Quicken for Mac 2015 or later…<\/strong> menu item. An open panel will appear.<\/li>
  5. Drag the highlighted document from step 2 to the open panel in CheckBook<\/strong>, or navigate within the panel to the document and highlight it, then click the Open<\/strong> button at the bottom right corner of the panel. A save panel will appear.<\/li>
  6. Name the document in the Save As<\/strong> field at the top of the panel, choose a location to save the document (we recommend your Documents<\/strong> folder), and click the Create<\/strong> button at the bottom right corner of the panel.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Your Quicken accounts will appear in a brand new CheckBook document, ready for your first reconciliation. Take the next step!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Quicken Essentials for Mac<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Like Quicken for Mac 2015 or later<\/strong>, you only need to find your document and tell CheckBook to create a new document with the data in that document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Open Quicken Essentials<\/strong> so you can see your data.<\/li>
    2. At the top of the window, where you can see the name of the document, hold the Command (\u00e2\u0152\u02dc)<\/strong> key on your keyboard while you click the name of the document. A menu will appear. Click the second<\/strong> item in the menu, then release the Command<\/strong> key. Your document should be highlighted in the Finder<\/strong>.<\/li>
    3. Open CheckBook<\/strong> or CheckBook Pro<\/strong>.<\/li>
    4. Go to the File<\/strong> menu, near the top left corner of the screen, down to New<\/strong>, and click the Document from Quicken Essentials for Mac…<\/strong> menu item. An open panel will appear.<\/li>
    5. Drag the highlighted document from step 2 to the open panel in CheckBook<\/strong>, or navigate within the panel to the document and highlight it, then click the Open<\/strong> button at the bottom right corner of the panel. A save panel will appear.<\/li>
    6. Name the document in the Save As<\/strong> field at the top of the panel, choose a location to save the document (we recommend your Documents<\/strong> folder), and click the Create<\/strong> button at the bottom right corner of the panel.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Your Quicken Essentials accounts will appear in a brand new CheckBook document, ready for you to get to work. Perform your first reconciliation<\/a> and you’re off and running!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Quicken 2007 and earlier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      First,<\/strong> you’ll need to get your data out of Quicken and into a QIF<\/strong> or QMTF<\/strong> file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      <\/div>\n\n\n\n

      To export your data from Quicken to QIF or QMTF<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Open Quicken<\/strong> so you can see your data.<\/li>
      2. Go to the File<\/strong> menu near the top left corner of your screen and down to Export<\/strong>. If you see a submenu, click a menu item that includes “QIF”<\/strong> or “QMTF”<\/strong>. If you don’t see a submenu, click Export<\/strong>.<\/li>
      3. If you see additional options, be sure to tell Quicken<\/strong> to export all of your transactions <\/strong>for the entire date range<\/strong> you’ve been using Quicken.<\/li>
      4. Save the exported file to your Desktop<\/strong> so you’ll have no trouble finding it.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Now that you have a QIF<\/strong> or QMTF<\/strong> file with all your Quicken data in it, let’s bring that file into CheckBook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        To import a QIF or QMTF file into CheckBook<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Open CheckBook<\/strong> or CheckBook Pro<\/strong>.<\/li>
        2. If you haven’t created a document yet, you should see a small window with three choices. Click the Create a New Accounts Document<\/strong> button and save your new document in your Documents<\/strong> folder.<\/li>
        3. Select an Account to import into. If you need to create a new Account, leave the Starting Balance<\/strong> field set to 0.00<\/strong>.<\/li>
        4. Go to the File<\/strong> menu near the top left corner of your screen, down to the Import<\/strong> submenu, and click the QIF or QMTF…<\/strong> menu item. A window with a file browser will appear.<\/li>
        5. Navigate to your Desktop<\/strong>, select the QIF<\/strong> or QMTF<\/strong> file you exported from Quicken<\/strong>, and click the Import<\/strong> button at the bottom right corner of the window. The Import Options<\/strong> window will appear.<\/li>
        6. At the top of the window, click the Import Account<\/strong> button to reveal a menu of accounts in the QIF or QMTF file, then click the name of the account you want to import.<\/li>
        7. Leave the rest of the options for now and click the OK<\/strong> button at the bottom right corner of the window. A preview of the Entries you’re about to import will appear.<\/li>
        8. Give the preview a look to be sure the details appear just the way you expect. Quicken will only export certain data, so if a column is empty that’s just because the data for that column wasn’t in the QIF or QMTF file. When you’re ready to continue, click the OK<\/strong> button at the bottom right corner of the window. CheckBook will ask if it’s OK to continue. Click the Continue<\/strong> button and your Quicken transactions will now appear as Entries in your CheckBook Account.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Repeat steps 3 through 8<\/strong> for all the Quicken accounts you want to import and you’re ready for the next step: Your first reconciliation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          After importing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          You’ll probably want to reconcile right away. Look in Quicken<\/strong> for the last balance you reconciled, click the Reconcile<\/strong> button at the bottom of the CheckBook<\/strong> document window, and enter that last reconciled balance in the Statement Balance<\/strong> field, in the Statement<\/strong> column at the bottom right. Don’t focus on the Account<\/strong> column for now – you won’t need it yet. As long as you haven’t marked anything as “cleared”<\/strong> in Quicken<\/strong> since your last reconciliation, your Statement Balance<\/strong> should match your Resolved Balance<\/strong>, so your Unreconciled<\/strong> total should now be zero. Click the small Reconcile<\/strong> button below the Unreconciled<\/strong> total, confirm you want to reconcile, and you’ve completed your first CheckBook reconciliation. Hooray!<\/strong> Now click the Entry<\/strong> button at the bottom of the window to get back to managing your Entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
