{"id":556,"date":"2010-11-09T08:39:51","date_gmt":"2010-11-09T14:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/?p=556"},"modified":"2010-11-09T08:39:51","modified_gmt":"2010-11-09T14:39:51","slug":"daylight-saved-is-a-penny-earned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/?p=556","title":{"rendered":"Daylight Saved is a Penny Earned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-557 alignleft\" title=\"Benjamin Frankin's idea was published in 1784\" src=\"http:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Franklin-Benjamin-Journal-de-Paris-1784-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Franklin-Benjamin-Journal-de-Paris-1784-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Franklin-Benjamin-Journal-de-Paris-1784-711x1024.jpg 711w, https:\/\/www.splasmata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Franklin-Benjamin-Journal-de-Paris-1784.jpg 1354w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Feeling a bit groggy this week?<\/p>\n<p>Wondering <em><strong>who<\/strong><\/em><strong> <\/strong>came up with this idea of Daylight Saving anyway?<\/p>\n<p>The History of Daylight Saving goes all the way back to a satirical letter Benjamin Franklin wrote to a French Journal in 1784.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Franklin, who enjoyed staying up until the wee hours of the night, wrote to the people of Paris (who apparently also loved the nightlife), &#8220;Your readers, who with me have never seen any signs of sunshine before noon, and seldom regard the astronomical part of the almanac, will be as much astonished as I was, when they hear of his [The Sun] rising so early.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Franklin went on to talk about his surprise when, one morning, he woke up earlier than usual.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I considered that, if I had not been awakened so early in the morning, I should have slept six hours longer by the light of the sun, and in exchange have lived six hours the following night by candle-light; and, the latter being a much more expensive light than the former..(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webexhibits.org\/daylightsaving\/franklin3.html\">read the full letter)<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Examining this expense in detail, Franklin drew up some calculations regarding how much the city of Paris could save if they were able to use more natural light.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his suggestions were obvious comedy, like proposing a tax on houses whose windows didn&#8217;t let in the light. Or trying to force people to utilize natural light by posting guards outside candle shops to make sure no one purchases &#8220;more than one pound of candles per week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still, Franklin&#8217;s assessment that, &#8220;All the difficulty will be in the first two or three days,&#8221; seems to be, in both the Spring Ahead and the Fall Back, so&#8230;<em>yawn<\/em>&#8230;true.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feeling a bit groggy this week?
