Work Life Work Life Work Life

How much does your personal life flow into your work life and vice versa?

This morning, I rolled across this article exploring work/life balance. The author’s viewpoint is unique in that she considered it important to have some overlap between work and personal life.

“We job-goers like to throw out the term “work/life balance” a lot. In my world, that balance simply isn’t work vs. life; it’s not two separate buckets. It’s more like a work/life Venn Diagram. It has to be. And I’m telling you, I’m the better for this overlap. Let me explain.”

She goes on to let readers know a little bit about herself and her life, detailing how her co-workers and workplace support each other.

Contrary to the usual advice about compartmentalizing your life, the author asks readers to consider the benefits of sharing some of yourself with your co-workers.

I’d tell you more, but then you’d miss out on reading it yourself…

Climb every mountain: Audiobook Builder & Checkbook Pro purr with Apple’s newest cat

Good news CheckBook, CheckBook Pro & Audiobook Builder users! The latest versions of your personal finance manager and audiobook organizer are compatible with Mountain Lion.

As many of you know, OS X Mountain Lion, is now available on the Mac App Store. Apple’s latest cat boasts 200+ new features and improvements and appears to be worth the investment of $19.99. Feeling resistant to change? Check out Apple’s alphabetical list of what’s new to gear up for the upgrade.  Or look up “Mountain Lion” on your favorite search engine and uncover an ocean of reviews.

Two straight-forward and detailed reviews worth reading are: Apple OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 review and Apple Mountain Lion Review: A No-Brainer Operating System Upgrade.

Brian Heater’s detailed review, including a video guiding readers through the process of upgrading, will certainly motivate many readers to upgrade. Says Heater, “It’s a simple sequence of waiting for the download, sitting through a few reboots and then, presto, you have a new OS.” Sounds good, right? Though he does also point out that, “these upgrades don’t include any significant changes to the overall look and feel,” the reviewer’s overall impression is that Mountain Lion is worth both the minimal hassle to upgrade and the price.

Joanna Stern’s look at Mountain Lion highlights the ease of use, includes an explanation of some of the most-used features, and a word of advice regarding 3rd party Apps.  Stern reminds users, “Speaking of apps, I didn’t have any issues installing third-party apps on two laptops running Mountain Lion. If there are specific apps you rely on you will want to check that they are compatible with the new software to be safe.”

Which brings us back to the good news…Splasm Software’s products are purring with Mountain Lion! Just make sure that you are using the latest versions of Checkbook, CheckBook Pro, and Audiobook Builder.  Click the links to get to each product’s page. At the bottom of each page is a download button where you can get up-to-the-minute, gorgeous,  Mountain Lion-ready versions.

(Psst…an overwhelming majority of our updates are free to current users!)

Create some time to give back

Volunteering is great, but who has the time? Like exercise, eating veggies, and taking vacations, giving back to our community is one of those “obvious” things that we may feel we should do.

Frequently, though, day-to-day chores may get in the way. We feel too tired at the end of a long day to even think about adding anything else. What we may not realize is that adding volunteer work can-like physical exercise-energize our lives.

One of my friends has a t-shirt that reads: “Volunteer Work: It Doesn’t Pay.” While that may appear to be true, and did elicit a loud chuckle from me, there are many ways in which volunteer work does reward us.

We all have passions. The things we desire to do may be things we are naturally good at; talents, skills we don’t get to use in our present work, or making a contribution towards something that we feel is important to our society.

I’m not sure about you, but my main barrier to volunteer work is that I over-estimate the level of involvement I need to make in order for my efforts to be meaningful.  That my contribution must involve a high level of time in order to be valuable. Have you ever felt this way?

Taking on too much rapidly leads to burn-out. While it can be amazing to get out there and break new ground, working into the early hours of the morning to achieve our dreams…it’s just as valuable to give back in small ways on a consistent basis.

At Splasm Software, we are given one day a quarter to volunteer. I’ve never had this type of opportunity at previous places of employment. In the past, I’ve had to squeeze in volunteer work in the evenings or on the weekends.  This quarter, I chose to use the skills I’ve developed here at Splasm, creating newsletters, and made a quarterly newsletter for Spiral Natural Foods, my local co-op:

What are you passionate about?

What is one small way you can use your talents to create the type of community you want to live in, and/or leave to the next generation?

Make your mac more accessible with Mac-Access

For the sensory-impaired, navigating new technology is always a challenge, but one that is well worth the effort. Eager to assist others within the Apple community, Gordon, who is totally blind himself, co-founded Mac-Access with his visually-abled partner, Lynne. Mac-Access is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to assist the sensory-impaired with everything Mac OS and iOS; with an emphasis on accessibility.

The people at Mac-Access have reviewed a number of products including Audiobook Builder. As long-time users, Gordon and Lynne have helped shape the development of Audiobook Builder as well as shared valuable getting started tips and tricks with other new users. Audiobook Builder would not be the product it is today without the feature requests given to us by the people who love it. Some of the highest quality suggestions we have gotten for Audiobook Builder have come from visually impaired users and we appreciate the feedback!

“Mac-Access’s primary purpose is to provide a friendly and informal place of discussion for those with a common interest in Apple’s products and those of third party developers like Splasm Software, in the form of an E-Mail forum. We have assisted quite a number of former die-hard Microsoft Windows users to make the switch to Mac OS and iOS,” stated Gordon. Although accessibility is the primary topic of discussion, it isn’t the only one. Anything Apple-related is fine. Mac-Access provides a positive wealth of friendly, knowledgeable, interesting and well-informed individuals who are only too willing to share their skills and knowledge with you.

Mac-Access welcomes all kinds of people; you don’t have to be disabled or sensory-impaired to join. Share your opinions, ask questions, and connect with this great community of Apple enthusiasts.

Check-out Mac-Access today! Their website is: http://www.mac-access.net

Fitness for Geeks–Book Review

Do you know any tech savvy, star trek loving, fixers of anything with tiny screws?

If so, Fitness for Geeks might be a fun gift for your friend or yourself. Being published by the same company that publishes Make magazine definitely gives it some geek cred, this book looks at healthy living in the detail-oriented (and extreme) way that only a certain type of person can enjoy.

The team over at My.Mac.com wrote a detailed review of “Fitness for Geeks” this past Monday.

Looking at some of ideas in the book, the reviewer felt that some were, “… common sense, like the importance of sleep and de-stressing, while others are a little more controversial, like fasting and freezing swims.”

Hrm. Intriguing…
